Fly traps are a great alternative to harmful pesticides and chemicals while doing the same job: eradicating those pesky flies.
Purchasing the best fly trap will maintain a better hygiene for your home, and will help you get rid of those unwanted flies for good. We tested 73 different fly trap brands on Amazon, and filtered down the list to the top 5 that we loved. Without further ado, here are the top fly traps that did the job impressively well.
You will need:
* Container with a lid (empty and clean, no food smells) * One piece of apple or any fruit. * 1/2 cup of vinegar. * Water to fill up the rest (any kind) * Optional: some sort of attractant such as meat or fish scraps or something sticky like honey to draw them towards the trap.
* A strong insecticide such as pyrethrum (for outside use only) How to make it:
1. Fill up about 1/3 of the container with water and add a little bit of vinegar so it would smell good for flies, but not so strong that it would kill them right away
2. Place the piece of fruit into the container and add some water to make it float.
3. Set it in a place where you can easily watch the flies and see how many are catching on the fruit 3. (Optional) Add some attractant, such as scraps of meat or fish
4. After about half an hour, check to see if there’s any flies caught in your trap
How do I use it?
1. Set up your trap in an area where you have noticed flies visiting often, like by your house door or near a window
2. Place it in a view where you can easily catch flies with your eyes. Here’s what I usually do:
* I set up my trap in an area of my house where there are many flies *** In the mornings, there are always lots of flies that come to my house. You can just see them flying around the window and landing on the glass. So I put my fruit here so they would have to land on it to get their daily food*** 2. To actually catch the flies, I use a net (the kind that people use to catch butterflies) or a piece of paper over the window if it doesn’t have insects on it.
3. Before you leave home, make sure your fly trap is working
4. When you come back in the evening, check if there’s any flies in your trap. If there’s some, take out the fruit and dispose of it. Then clean your container well with water so there’s no vinegar smell left behind.
5. The next morning, repeat the steps again 6. If you realize that your food is gone or flies are no longer landing on it, you can either move it somewhere else or replace the piece of fruit. I usually leave it at the same place and add a cotton ball soaked in honey so they will stick to it. It’s a nice smell for them so they tend to stay there longer 🙂
A sticky or glue fly trap uses a special adhesive called the Catchmaster glue board to trap and kill flies. The Catchmaster glue board contains a powerful adhesive that sticks to the fly’s feet. Sticky boards can be used as indoor or outdoor traps, but are most effective outdoors. Some models come with an odor attractant to lure flies into the trap.
These traps usually go unnoticed by humans because their neutral colors blend in with indoor surroundings and they don’t emit an odor.
Odor attractants include rotten meat, fish scraps or rotting dairy products such as sour milk and butter curds. For small areas, use several sticky traps placed several feet apart. For larger areas, place traps every 20 feet or so.
You need to use as many sticky fly traps as a fly can get caught in them.
For indoor use, you can put up several sticky boards around your house or apartment. In larger areas, you may need to place more than one board outside each window or door.
Outdoor settings usually require one large board for your entire yard. A note of caution: Don’t leave your homemade fly trap out on hot days because that glue would melt and the trap could fail.
The catchmaster glue boards are not harmful to pets or humans when used as directed.
To avoid glue cleanup from any fly trap, you can place your board in one of the sticky fly trap receptacles that catches the flies, and then empty the trash without touching the sticky board. Make sure to clean up all other pieces before disposing of your trash.
You should dispose of sticky fly traps that have been in use for a while outdoors because they may become contaminated with rat or mouse droppings.
Sticky fly traps contain no toxic chemicals and are safe for use around children and pets. Any insect that is trapped in a sticky trap will not be able to escape and will eventually die. Glue boards can be used around food preparation areas because flies do not typically land on people or food.
A fly zapper is an electric bug killer that attracts and kills flies. It works by providing a continuous, steady stream of high-voltage, low-amperage electricity that electrocutes the fly to kill it instantly upon contact.
